Review:
I don't listen to a huge amount of crust punk so i'm going to give this a very unbiased review. This is fairly unoriginal and at times rather dull Crust punk with some heavy grindcore influences throughout (most noticeable in Skulls, Turn Of The Tide and Nightmare). They're a pretty cool band, a few great songs and a few horrible songs throughout the album. One of these horrible songs that stuck out was Shoot, Knife, Strangle, Beat and Crucify, this song is pretty much one 3 minute breakdown with the same few lines repeated over and over again. It was repetitive, annoying and well.... I just really don't like breakdowns, they suck (unless tastefully pulled off, I.E. Suffocation).
The guitars are down tuned, distorted and for the most part, badass. The guitarist really isn't too keep on changing up riffs and some of the riffs he uses get annoying after they've reared their ugly heads in the fifth different song on the album. The guitarist seems competent, and some of the non-repeating riffs are really, really good. hell, a few of the constantly repeating ones are cool. I must listen to too much metal because towards the end of the albums I was hoping for a quick guitar solo or two.
The drums are really well done, thrashy and filled to the brim with constant badass D-beats. The only time I really can't stand the drummer is during the really badly done breakdown filled song Shoot, Knife, Strangle, Beat and Crucify. That song is just a pain in the ass to listen to, I made it through that song once and was done with it, the rest of the album I listened to at least three times or so. Anyways, lets get back to the drumming. Other then his messy breakdowns I really can't complain, I wish he could've been flashier and used some fills and rolls but hell, thats asking too much now isn't it?
The bass is really good and is used in a few really cool parts and tempo changes, the bass and drum intros on a few of the songs are really great and are a blast to listen to. The bass, like the guitar, is downtuned, fuzzy and angry. Very cool.
The vocals are a different story, the vocalist can pull off some cool mid-range growls and shit like that, but his voice when he's "singing" really gets on my nerves, thankfully they only used those vocal styles on one song that I could tell ( Shoot First). The screaming and yelling that you normally find in Crust is here in all it's glory. The vocalist is very good at doing a wide variety of vocals on this album and it sounds really good overall.
On my final note I can say that this is a very decent foray into the Crust punk genre and should be checked out if your new to Crust Punk.
Give It A Spin!
